Gold Coast: Author Talk

Book now to join author David Dyer as he explores his reimagining of the experience of a 1960s Apollo mission.

The whole world has just watched Neil and Buzz walk on the Moon. Now they’re struck by terror: the lunar module’s engine has failed. There’s no back-up, no other way off the surface. If the astronauts can't fix the problem, they'll slowly run out of oxygen and die.

Meet Australian author David Dyer as he talks about his new novel This Kingdom of Dust, a bold reimagining of a 1960s Apollo mission, the experience of its astronauts, and those waiting for them at home.

Melbourne: In Conversation at Readings Emporium

Join us to hear David Dyer in conversation.

Dyer wrote the bestselling book The Midnight Watch in 2016 which was based on the true story of the SS Californian, the ship that saw the Titanic's distress rockets and yet, unfathomably, did nothing. His new book This Kingdom of Dust is a reimagining of the famous 1969 moon landing. One of the main concerns at the time was the astronauts becoming stuck on the Moon. If their spaceship broke down, there was no hope of rescue. The men would slowly run out of oxygen, while the whole world watched. The novel explores what would have happened had this horrifying scenario come true. It not only looks at the astronauts themselves, but their wives at home for who gender stereotypes and expectations could be just as confining as the tiny spacecraft in which their husbands flew.

Sydney: Australian National Maritime Museum

Come along to the Australian National Maritime Museum to here me talk about both The Midnight Watch and This Kingdom of Dust. I’ll be discussing what happened on board the ship that watched the Titanic sink, the suffragettes of 1912, the NASA’s worst fear during the Apollo missions, what it was like to be an astrowife in the 1960s, whether it’s possible to fall in love with a machine, and other things. Should be fun!
